[That would be me then! ] Live music photography combines two of my greatest passions and pleasures. The photographs are arranged into albums, one for each gig or artist and there are also a few photographs in a miscellaneous collection. Please see the Band and gig listings page for a full list of all the collections. All pages refer back to that list.

The photographs you see here have only been achieved through the generosity of the artists and bands I've worked with, who made it possible for me to have the opportunity for close access or secure positions to work and I thank them for their generosity and support. All of these photos have been taken with permission, many commissioned by the bands themselves.

If you're in a band or manage one and would like some live performance photographs taking, please contact me for more information. I'm based in east Lancashire in England and can attend most music venues in the north west of England. I can sometimes offer special terms for unsigned bands if I'm available and have the capacity to do so, so please e-mail me your requirements.

Photographing live music

My personal approach has always been to try and capture the performance as it was enjoyed by the audience, the gritty, sweaty realism of loud music and the expending of a great deal of energy, often in less than salubrious surroundings, amidst smoke and beer fumes. These conditions are less than ideal for photography and the biggest enemy is the low level of light. I try wherever possible, to work with the available light and most of the work you will see on the site has been done without flash.

I work exclusively in the digital format now, the immediacy of the results and the abilty to take a great number of speculative shots without worrying about the cost of processing have made it the perfect format for the way I like to work. I am often asked how I achieve the photos I do here using a digital camera and without flash, so I've added a tutorial document, based on my personal experience.

Please browse the pages using the bands and gig guide and I hope you enjoy my work.
